ESS IN THE REAL WORLD Episode 02: How Much Battery Capacity Do You Really Need?
More battery capacity doesn't always mean a better ESS.
The key question is:
How much energy does the system actually need to store?
Battery sizing should consider:
🔹 Daily energy consumption
🔹 Critical load consumption
🔹 Required backup duration
🔹 Solar generation
🔹 Depth of Discharge (DoD)
🔹 System efficiency
🔹 Future energy demand
A simple way to think about it:
Required Battery Energy ≈ Backup Load × Backup Time ÷ System Efficiency
For example, if the critical loads require 5 kW and backup is needed for 4 hours, the system needs to provide approximately 20 kWh of usable energy—before considering system losses and reserve requirements.
👉 Battery sizing should be based on energy demand, not simply on “more is better.”
